Mac Sales Growth Outpaces Overall PC Market
Apple’s Mac business significantly outperformed the broader PC market in the third quarter of 2025, according to new data from Counterpoint Research. The analysis indicates Mac shipments grew 14.9% year-over-year, nearly double the overall PC market growth rate of 8.1% during the same period.

Industry analysts suggest Apple’s strong performance was “thanks to popular new MacBook models and enterprise adoption,” according to the report. The company ranked second among major PC manufacturers behind Lenovo, which saw 17% growth, and slightly ahead of Asus at 14% growth.
Windows 10 Transition Driving Market Expansion
The broader PC market’s 8.1% growth appears to be primarily driven by the approaching Windows 10 sunset, according to the analysis. Counterpoint’s report states that “with nearly 40% of the current PC installed base still on Windows 10, this replacement cycle is poised to be a major catalyst for PC market growth over the next few years.”
Strategic inventory adjustments related to certain US import tariff policies also contributed to the market expansion, sources indicate. Dell was the only major manufacturer to record a decline during the quarter, with shipments down 1%, while the “Others” category fell 3%.
AI PCs Represent Next Growth Wave
While current growth is largely driven by operating system migration, analysts suggest the industry is preparing for a more significant transformation with the rise of AI PCs. Counterpoint Senior Analyst Minsoo Kang stated that “this next wave of growth has not yet fully materialized in the Q3 2025 numbers.”
Looking ahead, the report indicates that AI PCs are expected to drive market growth starting next year, “following the launch of new AI chipsets by key manufacturers.” This suggests the current replacement cycle driven by Windows 10 migration may soon be complemented by additional growth from AI-capable devices.
Market Position and Competitive Landscape
Apple’s strong quarterly performance reinforces its position in the global PC market, with the company maintaining its status as a top-tier manufacturer. The 14.9% growth rate demonstrates the continued success of Apple’s transition to its own silicon processors and the appeal of its MacBook lineup to both consumer and enterprise customers.
The competitive landscape shows varying fortunes among major manufacturers, with Lenovo leading in growth percentage while Apple solidifies its second-place position. Market watchers will be monitoring whether Apple can maintain this momentum as the industry transitions toward AI-focused computing in the coming years.
