Europa Chip Targets Edge AI Performance With Backward Compatibility
Axelera AI is positioning its upcoming Europa AI accelerator chip as a formidable competitor to Nvidia in the high-performance edge computing space, with a strategic focus on compatibility and accessibility. According to Alexis Crowell, Axelera AI’s CMO and General Manager of Americas, this compatibility-focused strategy enables customers to upgrade their existing systems without requiring complete hardware replacements. “What we’re intentionally trying to do is make sure that it’s not just net new designs,” Crowell explained in an interview. “Everybody’s got a PCIe slot, so if I can plug into those, then it makes the sale easier.”

Axelera AI claims significant performance advantages over competing solutions, particularly against Nvidia’s edge computing products. According to company-provided data, Europa delivers three to six times higher performance per dollar for Llama 3 models compared to unnamed competitor products, which Crowell confirmed include Nvidia’s L40 GPU and unspecified Jetson system-on-chip products.

The performance advantage appears most pronounced with larger models, particularly the 70-billion-parameter Llama 3 model where a four-chip Europa system demonstrates the highest margin. For computer vision applications, Axelera AI states that Europa provides varying levels of performance advantages in frames per second across different versions of models including ResNet-50 and various Yolo implementations.

Europa introduces several architectural improvements that differentiate it from the Metis platform:
- Increased Processing Units: Doubled to eight AI processing units per chip
- Expanded Memory: Quadrupled maximum memory capacity to 64 GB per chip
- Enhanced Bandwidth: 200 GBps DRAM bandwidth and 128 MB L2 SRAM
- Integrated Processing: 16 RISC-V vector processing cores enabling full pre- and post-processing on-chip
- Video Decoder: On-board decoder to optimize computer vision model performance
The integration of RISC-V cores represents a particularly significant advancement, allowing Europa to handle pre- and post-processing tasks that previously required offloading to the system’s CPU. “We now can take a lot of that on ourselves directly in a way that provides a much better total cost of ownership for the customers,” Crowell noted.
Software Continuity and Ecosystem
Europa will utilize the same Voyager software development kit currently supporting Metis chips, ensuring continuity for existing customers and simplifying development for new adopters. This unified software approach enables companies to deploy both Metis and Europa chips within mixed solutions using a single development toolchain.
Crowell emphasized the importance of software to Axelera AI’s strategy, revealing that more than half of the company’s 200-plus workforce focuses on software development. “Ease of use is the only way any of these partners are going to actually go adopt Axelera’s chips,” she stated, highlighting the company’s commitment to providing a seamless developer experience.
