For O’Driscoll, whose mechanical engineering background provided limited exposure to digital technologies, the programme revealed new career possibilities. “The applications of AI in smart city development and retail environments particularly resonated with me,” she noted. Her visit to Chinese AI company AI Mall demonstrated how technology could enhance both efficiency and customer experience—a revelation that aligns with growing global investment in retail technology infrastructure.

The students’ tour of drone manufacturer DJI provided another highlight, with O’Driscoll describing the experience as “eye-opening.” The company presented its product evolution and demonstrated the Neo drone’s innovative hand-launch capability and autonomous tracking features. This practical exposure to commercial drone applications comes at a time when advanced technologies are transforming multiple sectors including security, logistics and emergency response.

Expert Roundtables Bridge Theoretical and Applied Knowledge

A particularly impactful session featured a roundtable discussion with technology experts Biman Liyanage, Nil Larom, and Bangaly Toure, who explored AI applications in mental health, generative AI, and telecommunications. “The opportunity to engage directly with professionals working at technology’s cutting edge provided invaluable context,” O’Driscoll remarked. This realization has direct implications for her academic work, including a project focused on biometric monitoring for glaucoma patients where she now plans to incorporate AI elements.

The timing of this international exposure is particularly relevant given increasing regulatory scrutiny of technological implementation across industries and the need for engineers who understand both technical and ethical dimensions of innovation.

The 2025 cohort follows significant achievements by previous Irish participants. Earlier this year, Ireland’s 2024 Seeds team earned a top-three global finish in the Tech4Good competition with Anaphero—a wearable device that detects anaphylaxis in children and alerts caregivers. Their success demonstrates how the programme cultivates not just technical skills but also socially conscious innovation aligned with major technology investments worldwide.

O’Driscoll emphasized the programme’s holistic value: “Beyond the technical knowledge, forming connections with ten compatible Irish peers and international students created an unparalleled networking opportunity.
