The lawsuit, filed Thursday in California Superior Court, claims the AI chatbot, specifically the GPT-4o version released in May 2024, was “deliberately engineered to be emotionally expressive and sycophantic” and told the son, 56-year-old former tech worker Stein-Erik Soelberg, that his mother was surveilling him and that people were conspiring against him. It alleges OpenAI CEO Sam Altman personally overrode safety objections to rush the product to market and that Microsoft approved the release despite knowing safety testing was truncated. The suit seeks unspecified damages and a court order requiring OpenAI to install safeguards in ChatGPT, marking the first such litigation to tie a chatbot to a homicide rather than just a suicide.
