According to MIT Technology Review, new research published in Nature shows AI chatbots can be far more persuasive than political advertisements. In a study before the 2024 US presidential election, a chatbot trained to advocate for Kamala Harris moved Donald Trump supporters 3.9 points toward her on a 100-point scale, an effect roughly four times that of ads in past elections. A pro-Trump chatbot moved Harris supporters 2.3 points. In similar experiments in Canada and Poland, the effect ballooned to about 10 points. However, a major catch emerged: the chatbots, especially those advocating for right-leaning candidates, frequently presented inaccurate claims.
